The Gili Selang Dive Site of Bali

Gili Selang

By Erwin Kodiat

If you ever dream of diving in an aquarium-like environment then you should consider Gili Selang. The abundant pristine soft coral and wide variety of species is what you get when you dive there. Often pelagic fishes come here. In fact, we were lucky enough to watch a group of scalloped hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini) in the 26 meters depth. They were group of eight with 2 meters length on average except one big guy that we believed to be the leader, which almost reach 3 meters in length. It was 23 degree of Celsius, cold enough for us, tropical divers. This dive site well known for its unpredictable strong current therefore be prepare with your sausage and good boatman that ought to chase you when you are drifted. On the subsequent dive we also saw a green turtle (Chelonia midas) eagerly swam try to balance itself in the middle of swirling current. Even a group of big bumphead parrotfish can not well maintain their balance when they meet the current, when we ourselves watched them by hanging on to the rock.

When we had our surface interval after diving Tepekong, usually it’s good to anchor the boat next to these three islands called Gili Mimpang. If you take a look at the islands, you will find on the top of one of them, there is a tree which has an eagle nest on it. The funny thing about this site is although it’s called shark point, we only once see a white tip shark here. An instructor friend of mine who is quite knowledgeable about this area suggested that if you were in the middle of mild to strong current combined with cold water (below 25 degree) then big chances you will see many sharks here.

Diving Gili Biaha, Bali

Words by: Erwin Kodiat

The name may not be the catchiest, but that does not detract us from the excitement of this dive site.
Situated in Amuk Bay which is quite popular as rough sea with unpredictable and strong current combined with heavy surge as a result of facing the open sea. One day, a friend told us about a small cave in Gili Biaha where a lot of sharks rest in there. Aside of the fact and bad reputation that the strong current, heavy surge and swell that sometimes making a dive worse, has been long time attached with this site, we still curious about this dive site. Therefore, we decided to give Gili Biaha a try.
