Bali Photo Hunting 2005

Commandant: Amadeus Bonaventura
Vice-Commandant: Yoga Raharja

The October 2005 FN Hunting Series will run from Friday, 21 October, to Sunday, 23 October 2005. We hope that during these three days, we can help all the FN participants to explore and record Bali from several perspectives: cultural, landscape and human interest.

As a note, because the program begins on Friday morning, we expect all participants from outside Bali to arrive on Thursday. Further, to facilitate coordination, we have booked rooms at a hotel in Sanur for Thursday night; this ensures that participants are not rushed and only need to wake up, grab their cameras and walk to the beach to take sunrise photos Friday morning.

Assuming that the participants from outside Bali will be arriving on different flights, we are not offering airport to hotel transfers. But don’t worry, there are taxis at the airport and it is a quick ride to Sanur.

Detailed daily schedules are given below:

At precisely 05:30, we will leave for Sanur Beach, to enjoy the beautiful sunrise. After, at around 07:00, we will return to the hotel for breakfast. After breakfast, the program continues with the landscape / wildlife session in the Bali Mangrove Park, from 09:00 to 11:00. Participants will then return to the hotel for a break (download memory cards and recharge batteries, shower or rest).
At 13:30 we will leave for Jimbaran Beach for the model session which is scheduled for two hours. At 16:00, we will continue to Uluwatu, for the sunset and to cover the “kecak” dance which usually begins at 18:30. Afterwards, we will return to the hotel in Sanur. There are no scheduled activities this night (free time). We hope that you don’t go to sleep too late, as we will have an early start in the morning to Kintamani.

Saturday, 22 October 2005

Field Coordinators:
- Goes Two
- Mario Andi Supria

There are three points of interest on the second day: landscape, architecture, and human interest.

Session 1
Theme: Landscape / Sunrise
Location: Kintamani
Time: 04:00 - 07:00 WITA

The highlight is the sunrise in Kintamani, from the Batur Lake harbor. It is expected that from here we will be able to shoot the sunrise with the mountain as the BG and boats or fisherman preparing for the day as the FG.

Participants staying in Ubud will need to leave at 04:00. If the participants stay in Sanur, they will have to leave even earlier, at 03:00, to not miss the sunrise. After the hunting in Kintamini finishes, we will have breakfast before continuing on to Penglipuran

Session 2
Theme: Architecture + Human Interest
Location: Penglipuran
Time: 07:30 - 11:00 WITA

Here we can cover the daily activities of the Balinese and Bali’s unique architecture. There is also a bamboo forest in Penglipuran Village which is very interesting to shoot.

BREAK: 11:00 - 12:00

Session 3
Theme: Landscape
Location: Gunung Kawi Temple
Attached is a photo of Gunung Kawi for those who have never been. It is a beautiful old temple carved into a hill.
Time: 13:00 - 16:00 WITA

Session 4
Theme: Landscape
Location: Tegal Lalang Rice Terraces
Time: 17:00 - 18:00 WITA
Note: After finishing in Tegal Lalang, we will head to Jembrana to check-in at the hotel.

Note: Don’t forget to bring your jacket as Kintamani will be very

cold in the morning.

Sunday, 23 October 2005

Field Coordinators:
- Arief Setiawan, Anto
- Abraham, Bram
- Rochmad Setiadi

Due to the distances that must be covered on day three, only cultural and human interest themes are on offer.

Session 1
Time: 05:00 - 11:00 WITA
Theme : Cultural (Makepung)
Location : Jembrana

Description:
Makepung is a buffalo race using carts known as “cikar”. The buffaloes are decorated with gold headpieces and race over a distance of four kilometers. Makepung is a group contest, with the West Group competing against the East Group. The border between these groups is the Ijo Gading River which flows through Negara city. There is no individual champion in Makepung, but rather a group champion.

Session 2
Time: 15:30 - Finish WITA
Theme: Cultural
Location: Pura Petilan, Pengrebongan, Kesiman, Denpasar

Description:
This event is an “Odalan” or temple birthday which is repeated once every six months in Pengrebongan (Denpasar). Many of the participants in this festival will be in trance and stab themselves with “keris” while not inflicting wounds. The area is small and will be crowded.

The real highlight of the day is the Makepung race described above. As we don’t want to miss this wonderful opportunity, it is expected that all participants be at the race site by 5:30 am, in time for the race preparation. There are many great photo ops during this preparation.

Note: Please don’t forget to bring lens cleaner as the competition can be very dusty. Also do not forget a hat and sun block… it will be HOT guys!

After the Makepung finishes, the participants will return to Denpasar. Hopefully there will be time to catch the Odalan at Pengrebongan Kesiman. As the area is small and crowded, we might have to push each other to get the shots.

After the Pengrebongan, the Bali October 2005 FN Hunting Series will finish. For those who still have time, and wish to continue hunting, we will gladly help you.
