Sunday in Ubud
Sunday is family day and we are always trying to devise new ways to make Gregor, our three year old son, happy. The trick is not so much in entertaining him, but in keeping ourselves entertained, too. And while shooting arcade bad guys at the mall makes him happy, it tends to drive me insane.
So, Sunday October 16, 2005 in Ubud.
Our friends Mia and Tom were taking Paulus from Jakarta up to Ubud for culinary delights. We decided to join them after exhausting our list of Sunday chores (including buying a new shower at ACE- a belated wedding present from the Kapal Selam gang- thanks guys!)
We headed up to Ubud mid-day and met Mia, Tom and Paulus at Naughty Nuri’s for what we like to call the tiger diet special. Mia and Tom had already shared a plate of ribs, but were waiting for pork chops to come off the grill. Hengky settled in for his rib special, and Gregor devoured a grilled chicken thigh. While Nuri’s BBQ is rightfully famous, it is not the most accommodating place for “cheating” vegetarians like myself. But I settled for a tuna sandwich and fries… no complaints… just wish they served the grilled tuna steak every day instead of only Thursdays…
Full as could be, I suggested we walk off some of the calories. We drove to the bottom of the Tjampuhan hill and parked the cars. Next to the bridge you can take a path down and across the river. There is a temple and the path continues up the ridge paralleling Tjampuhan’s restaurants and hotels. It was hot and humid in Ubud yesterday, and we were sweating as we trod up the path. Gregor was running circles around us all and Tom and Hengky were busy stopping for photo ops (but I think they just needed to catch their breath!)
We passed lots of Sunday couples looking for quiet places and a few other tourists making the hike. Reaching the top of the ridge, we took in the view for a few minutes before deciding to seek refreshment…
We walked back to the cars for a quick drive through Petulu village- known as the home of the heron. Hengky claims that there used to be hundreds of the white birds nesting in the trees, but when we drove through we only saw about a dozen. Still, the road’s rice fields are spectacular and well worth the drive.
Finally, we rewarded out effort with dessert at Casa Luna- my favorite is their lime tart, yum yum. Gregor got a big cup of ice cream for being such a good boy. Relaxing with a cappuccino and tiramisu, reading the Sunday paper, watching the river flow beneath us; this sure beats the mall!

This is a great spot in Ubud to walk around and enjoy pollution free views. The only downside is the heat and humidity. I’ve never done this walk without wishing for a cold pool or iced drink. But if you keep walking, there are some cafes for refreshment. Timing is key to this walk and it would be best early in the morning, but I only manage to do it mid-day!
I know, my belly has “popped” and now I’m all stomach… but since I’ve never had a fat belly before I think it’s fun. I want it to get big enough for me to balance a drink on hahaha. The little monster is wiggling up a storm now, too, which is also fun. At least Gregor now understands that he can’t ask Mommy to carry him as much as before!

Tjampuan… how wonderful and surreal it is to see my beautiful friend Thea and her lovely family stomping about Bali nearly 7 years after we studied there together. These sights make my memory ache for more. Can’t wait to see you again Thea, and meet your family at last! And i better get a trip out to Nuri’s Warung; i’ve been dreaming about those ribs for years. No kidding.
